Life is a research project

Class of 2021
I was fortunate enough to embark on the experience of student-faculty research and I’d like to posit the following: All of us are always engaging in research, whether we realize it or not. Our lives are our longest running research studies.

When things aren’t going right in our lives, what do we do? Like in any research study, if your method isn’t working, change it up! Try a new variable in your life or adjust what you’re doing so your research, your life, can be as meaningful as possible.

However, we must remember that we are not always on our own. When writing a literature review, we go through everything other individuals have already studied. They, too, have succeeded and failed, just like we have and will continue to in our own lives. Rely on those individuals in your life who have the knowledge and experience to

guide you through the challenges or questions you may be facing.

Fellow graduates, as we embark on a new journey in our lives, we must remember the tools and methods we’ve been given here at IC which can help us make our research, our lives as fulfilling as possible. Our professors and staff have all fostered in us the values of leadership and service so that we too can contribute to the improvement of the lives of those around us and our communities. From being involved in extracurriculars or academics, we now understand how being part of a collective group can create some of the most positive and impactful experiences for all involved. Let us never lose the spirit of building community with those around us, for we never know when we may need to lean on that community in times of difficulty. The past year has certainly demonstrated the importance of having community and knowing that you are supported during pernicious times.

After applying the methods of a liberal arts education, we’re left with the results of a vision of duty fostered in all students here since 1829. My fellow graduates, we are not simply leaving Illinois College in search of a job to keep us sufficiently afloat in the future. As we transition from IC, we must continue to carry the magnificent tradition of serving others and leading the way with the interdisciplinary knowledge and skills we have developed over the course of our undergraduate career. From the last year, we are also aware that there is a growing exigence for bold and contemplative leadership that will invigorate our society. I’m certain that sitting among us are many capable leaders who will surely invigorate and innovate in our lifetimes.

As future leaders of our world, it is imperative that we lead and serve our communities with the knowledge and compassion necessary to improve our lives, similar to how our professors and staff have done so we could grow as students, people and future professionals.

We have a bright road ahead of us and we have all of the skills to take charge of what lies ahead. Our collective experiences as a class form a mosaic of refreshing and inspirational leadership that I know will only continue to grow as we move into the professional world and beyond. We are now graduating from Illinois College, ready to pursue new and exciting opportunities.

Class of 2021, may your minds inspire future innovation, your hearts compassionately lead our communities and the world, and your hands carefully guide others toward a world of care for one another.
