From her first rainy summer visit, Kelly Payne ’02 knew Illinois College was home.

An English literature major, she threw herself into campus life: writing for The Rambler and Forte, leading the Residence Hall Association, working in the Writing Center and even tutoring philosophy. Along the way, professors made her feel known and valued. “Even those I never had in class would greet me by name,” she recalls.

That supportive environment prepared Kelly for her career in teaching. After earning a master’s in English at Kent State University, she returned to Illinois and has spent more than 20 years teaching at Olney Central College. “My IC professors welcomed dialogue and encouraged us to ask questions. I try to create that same environment for my students today,” she says.

Though she lives hours from Jacksonville, Kelly’s connection to IC has never faded. A proud member of the Illinois College Society, she gives to the IC Fund to ensure current students have the same opportunities that shaped her. “As a student, I saw alumni supporting the College. Now that I can, it feels important to do the same,” she says.

For Kelly, loyalty to Illinois College is about gratitude and belief in the Hilltop’s enduring impact. “It was the best decision I ever made. I wouldn’t be who I am today without IC.”

As Illinois College approaches its bicentennial, Kelly’s story reflects the foundation on which the Kelly Payne ’02 College is built: the loyalty of alumni who continue to invest in a place that still feels like home.
