Illinois College awarded degrees to 244 graduates in its Class of 2020 during a virtual commencement ceremony that premiered on May 10 at 1 p.m.
I really believe that the result is a virtual ‘event’ that preserves the spirit of celebration that makes Commencement so special.
Catharine O’Connell, Provost and Dean of the College

The ceremony marked the historic anniversary of the first commencement in the state of Illinois, when IC awarded its first degrees. This year’s ceremony was also historic -- it was the first time the ceremony has been held virtually.

Thousands of viewers from around the world — across the U.S. and in places like Germany, Ecuador, Jordan, Ghana, Zambia, the UK, Japan, Nepal, Nigeria, Sweden, Belgium, Ireland and Italy — tuned in to see the 2020 Commencement ceremony.

President Barbara A. Farley and Provost and Dean of the College Catharine O’Connell led the ceremony. Technology played a big role in capturing the spirit of Commencement while observing social distancing.

“So much of the joy of Commencement is having the community come together - students, faculty, and families - to celebrate those who are graduating,” said Provost O’Connell. “I really believe that the result is a virtual ‘event’ that preserves the spirit of celebration that makes Commencement so special.”

An honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree was conferred on Duane E. Hess ’71. Since graduating with Phi Beta Kappa honors, Hess has been dedicated to Illinois College throughout his life. As a trustee, he has provided valuable leadership to his alma mater since 2010, serving on numerous committees and working to ensure IC’s financial sustainability. Hess served on the Illinois College Alumni Board of Directors from 2004 to 2009. He is a lifetime member of the Illinois College Society, a member of the Julian M. Sturtevant Society and a longtime supporter of IC athletics. Hess built a successful career at Beard Implement Company, retiring as president in 2010. Hess and wife Sharon reside in Palmetto, Florida.

One of the most poignant Illinois College Commencement traditions comes at the end of the ceremony when the faculty forms two lines and congratulates the graduates as they recess. To recreate this special moment, the virtual Commencement included special messages from the faculty at the conclusion of the event.
