It started on the Hilltop
The Honorable Judge Jerry ’70 and Luana Meinders Flynn ’71
Jerry and Luana Flynn met in a calculus class taught by Professor Franz in the fall of 1967. It was both of their first years at IC as Luana was a first-year student and Jerry had transferred in as a sophomore.
Luana said: “He sat behind me in class. We became friends during the class and later dated. We married in 1973.”
The couple recently celebrated 50 years of marriage, and they have continued to develop close ties to their alma mater throughout those decades. Their oldest son, Jeremy Flynn ’99, and grandson Grant Flynn ’21 both excelled at IC.
The Flynns dedicated their careers to serving their community of Red Bud, Illinois -- Jerry as a resident circuit court judge and Luana as a second grade teacher. They have loyally given back annually to the IC Fund and student scholarships since graduating. In 2023, the couple established the Honorable Judge Jerry Flynn ’70 and Luana Meinders Flynn ’71 Endowed Scholarship agreement to honor the life-changing experiences they had at Illinois College and their commitment to providing opportunities to the next generation of students.
The couple is pictured at IC Homecoming 2022 with their grandchildren.
