Preparing in the world of opera

Mathilda Edge ’11 attended her first opera while she was a student at Illinois College on a global BreakAway trip to Berlin, Germany, in 2011.

She later returned to Berlin to study music and today, Edge has made a name for herself as a talented opera singer and vocal teacher.

Edge majored in music, and management and organizational leadership. She said the combination of her studies, along with the leadership opportunities and travel experiences she had at IC, all factored into her success.

“While at IC I was able to be a leader in numerous student organizations,” said Edge. “I believe much of my time at IC prepared me for the busy and often crazy schedule I function within now.”

She also believes the liberal arts played a key role in her ability to succeed in her career, helping her to better Preparing for the world of opera understand music through her diverse knowledge across fields — like the many languages in which she sings, the mathematics of music theory and understanding the religious underpinnings of the works she sings.

Edge has received numerous awards and accolades for her moving performances, most recently she was named as a semifinalist for Houston Grand Opera's Eleanor McCollum Competition. In May, she took third place in the CooperBing Competition with Opera Columbus.

Edge is in the process of completing her Doctor of Music degree at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. While there, she held a graduate assistantship and was a recipient of the prestigious Georgina Joshi Fellowship. She has served on the faculty at Indiana State University, and recently accepted a position at the University of Northern Colorado as assistant professor of music in voice starting in fall 2018.
