Spring sports recap
The Lady Blues qualified for the 2017 Midwest Conference Tournament as well, making it the first time in program history that the team had gone to the MWC Tournament in back-to-back seasons. Mariah Hedges ’18, Jackie Reilly ’19 and Elyce Trout ’18 were all First Team All-MWC selections and Jess Feig ’19 was a Second Team All-MWC honoree.
The IC baseball team struggled in the early going before ending the year by playing its best ball of the season. The Blueboys ended 2017 with an 11-23 overall record, but were 5-5 in the last 10 games of the season. Dylan Jones ’18 was a First Team All-MWC South Division selection after going 5-2 with a 3.34 ERA on the season and throwing four complete games. Jones set a new IC single-game record when he recorded 13 strikeouts in a win over Monmouth.
The men’s golf team had a fourth-place finish at the 2017 Midwest Conference Championship. AJ Jeffers ’18 earned All-MWC honors by placing third individually at the tournament. Jeffers fired a final-round 73, the best score of anyone in the field on Sunday by three strokes. Bryce Oden ’20 was 16th at the tournament and Scott Pantier ’17 was 19th, while Dustin Simpson ’17 tied for 20th.
The turnaround continued for the Illinois College men’s tennis team as the Blueboys finished the season at 3-12, two years removed from a season in which the team didn’t win a single point in a match except via forfeit. Among those three victories were two conference wins, the first time in program history that IC won more than one MWC match in a season. Miguel Vaca ’19 became the program’s all-time wins leader in singles after just his sophomore season, going 12-7 from his No. 1 singles spot.
The Illinois College track and field teams each finished fourth at the 2017 MWC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, matching the fourth-place finishes each had at the Indoor Championships. Greg Cross ’18 (100 meter dash), Brant Bess ’18 (javelin) and Rachel Simpson ’17 (pole vault) were MWC champions, while more than 20 individuals had All-MWC performances. Additionally, Andrea Hyde ’20 qualified for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the 100 Meter Dash and finished 13th in the nation.
