The Illinois College Society brought Cuba to campus in July with A Night in Havana, celebrating the College’s ongoing collaborations in Cuba.

Students and faculty shared stories about their experiences and accomplishments on a recent trip to the country. The evening highlighted lively Cuban culture in a family-friendly atmosphere that included Cuban music, authentic cuisine and fun activities.

President Barbara A. Farley expressed her gratitude to Society members for their role as leaders in the IC community.

“Because of you, our students and faculty are extending IC’s global reputation throughout the world,” she said. “The meaningful work being done in Cuba — from orchid research to photography — is an illustration of how you are changing lives and expanding possibilities at Illinois College. Thank you for believing in the power of education.”

Charlene Kornoski-DuVall ’70 has been a member of the Illinois College Society since it launched. She said learning about the College and visiting with friends in a warm and welcoming environment is what stands out most about events like A Night in Havana.

Kornoski-DuVall spent more than 30 years as an educator and administrator for West Aurora School District #129 in Illinois. The reason she joined the Society dates back to 1966, when she began College at IC. She recalls receiving some financial aid, but that didn’t cover the total cost of her education. She has never forgotten those who helped her earn her bachelor’s and later her master’s degrees.

“Illinois College was a launching pad for me. When I am asked why I stay connected to Illinois College — with visits, regularly contributing to the College, and happily serving on the Alumni Association Board of Directors — my reply is that I am filled with gratitude for the role this institution has played in helping me achieve the quality of life I wanted for me and my family,” she said.

Like many who join the Illinois College Society, Kornoski-DuVall sees how she can now pay forward the gifts she received.

“For many students, the cost of college may be prohibitive. I received assistance and that assistance made a major impact in my life,” she explained. “It is extremely important to me to be able to ‘pay it forward.’ Contributing to the Illinois College Society is the vehicle I choose to use in order to get it done.”
