From the President
I believe in the special, critical role of institutions like Illinois College in developing the qualities of mind and character needed in the 21st century in students. I also believe that the world needs Illinois College now more than ever. Current and future generations of IC students are relying on us to step up for them and make sure IC inspires their achievement for years to come. Thank you for your dedication to the success of IC’s students and the College.
The world is grappling with a level of complexity that requires highly developed communication, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and an array of experiences that prepare graduates for the next steps in their personal and professional lives, including working closely with professors and mentors who encourage them to pursue their goals and dreams, study abroad, do internships, complete clinicals in hospitals and student teaching in schools, pursue research with faculty that is unique for undergraduates, and study an array of subjects across disciplines that broaden one’s horizons.
This edition of the Quarterly highlights Graduate READY stories of Illinois College alumni making impressive contributions locally, nationally, and internationally. The success of these students can be attributed to their commitment to academic achievement fueled by excellent faculty members and their participation in a wide array of hands-on learning opportunities known as high-impact practices identified by the American Association of Colleges & Universities. These practices include: 1) Undergraduate research, 2) Internships, 3) Collaborative assignments and projects, and 4) Service learning and community-based learning. IC’s goal is to open the door of opportunity to talented students who will make a difference in the world. Enjoy their stories!
I look forward to seeing you at Homecoming events on October 25-26. The campus is in excellent shape and looks beautiful as fall gets underway. We completed several capital improvement projects over the summer in support of academic programs and athletics, including fantastic renovations to Baxter Hall and Parker Science providing state-of-the-art instruction to IC’s fast-growing nursing program and the full refurbishment of the Ware Family Track in England Stadium. You will also notice in the evening the results of a transformative campus-wide lighting project illuminating the Upper and Lower quadrangles.
I was saddened this summer to announce to the Illinois College community the passing of Dr. Axel D. Steuer H’13 and Robert “Bob” Chipman ’74 H’23. Both men loved Illinois College and were fervent stewards of our past and future. They will be missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing them. Tributes to President Emeritus Steuer and Trustee Emeritus Chipman are part of this edition of the Quarterly.
All the best,
Barbara A. Farley
President
