Originally initiated through a grant from the Illinois State Historical Records Advisory Board, the project focuses on inventorying and digitizing thousands of photographs and documents that capture both Illinois College and local Jacksonville history.

The project’s scope is vast, involving the meticulous cataloging of archival materials, many of which had not been previously inventoried. By organizing and digitizing these records, the college gains intellectual control over its collection, enabling easier access for research and educational purposes. The digitized materials are made publicly accessible via Illinois College’s JSTOR forum, offering a valuable resource for students, faculty, and the broader community.

Key highlights from the collection include historic photographs of campus buildings, athletic events, and even the demolition of Jones Hall, reflecting the evolution of the College over time. While the project is ongoing, with many more records yet to be digitized, it has already created a substantial resource for those interested in the College’s history.

As the bicentennial approaches, the archive’s efforts will likely play a crucial role in creating exhibits and fostering a deeper connection to the College’s heritage. The “Sharing Our Heritage” project not only preserves the past but also enriches the educational and cultural landscape of Illinois College and the surrounding community.
