This certificate, aimed at students pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree, including nursing degrees, requires completion of culturally relevant global studies courses, advanced language study, and an approved global science experience.
The program is designed to help science students, who often face challenges incorporating study abroad into their schedules, gain valuable international experience. The first cohort, including students like Ally Wiseman ’24, who is pursuing a master’s degree in marine biology, highlights the program’s success. Wiseman credits the certificate with equipping her for global research, emphasizing the importance of linguistic and cultural competencies in scientific careers. “As someone who wants to do research globally one day, Illinois College did a great job with preparing me to do it one day through the programs that it provides along with this certificate. I can confidently say that I feel prepared to achieve the goals that I have because of everything that I was able to participate and do at Illinois College.”
The Global Science Certificate aligns with Illinois College’s mission to prepare students for a multicultural society, addressing both local and global challenges. The department encourages students to exceed basic foreign language requirements and engage deeply in intercultural studies to enhance their academic and professional trajectories.
