Honoring a legacy through giving: Beth Horton Hilleke ’83
Her grandfather, Walter Meyer ’35, and a handful of other family members are all IC alumni. Meanwhile, her other grandfather, George W. Horton Sr., and her father, George “Bill” Horton, Jr., both taught at IC in the physics and mathematics departments, respectively. Growing up in Jacksonville, Hilleke remembers evenings filled with IC football games, plays and parades — experiences that helped shape her lifelong connection to the College.
That lifelong connection inspired Beth and her late husband, Russell, to make a special gift through Russell’s IRA in 2024 to support the renovation of Crispin Hall. Their three-year pledge established a naming opportunity that honors her father.
Beth, a triple major in mathematics, chemistry and physics, says IC gave her more than academics, it gave her confidence, adaptability and community. “Even now, 40 years later, I use what I learned at IC every day,” she said.
She is especially proud of how IC continues to grow while staying true to its close-knit roots. From thriving new programs in nursing and agribusiness to welcoming students from closing colleges, IC’s resilience stands out. “It’s still a place where you can be a big fish in a small pond,” Beth said, “And the College has done a wonderful job of keeping people connected.”
As IC approaches its Bicentennial in 2029, Beth’s gift ensures future students will share in the same transformative experience that has shaped her family for generations. “I’m proud to be an IC graduate,” she said, “And proud to help others experience what made it so meaningful for me.”
