Illinois College to host art exhibit, presentation about Myanmar
The collaborative art exhibit, “Thukhuma: Painting Myanmar in Time of Transition,” will be on display in IC’s Schewe Library from April 26 through May 13. A special event to kick off the exhibit will be held on April 26 at 6:30 p.m. in Schewe Library that will include a panel presentation and walk through of the exhibit.
The panel discussion will include discussion of the political history of Myanmar by Findley Family Professor of International Affairs and Professor of Political Science Winston Wells, the country’s religious practices led by Professor of Philosophy and Religion Adam Porter, the art of painting led by Associate Professor of Art Jeff Garland. A senior student majoring in international studies will speak about her experiences growing up in Myanmar.
The exhibit showcases 36 contemporary paintings depicting various perspectives on the
current social and political situation in Myanmar. The show’s title refers to the word “thukhuma” which translates to “art or culture” in the Myanmar language of Pali. The exhibition explores art, culture, education and politics in the country formerly known as Burma, and provides a forum for analysis and debate.
The exhibit comes to Illinois College on loan from curator, Ian Holliday, who is vice-president and pro-vice- chancellor for teaching and learning at the University of Hong. Holliday’s guidance was instrumental in creating the exhibition.
The exhibit is free and open to the public during library hours Monday through Friday, 7:45 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., Saturdays 12 p.m. noon to 5 p.m. and Sundays 3 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.
The show is sponsored by the Illinois College Art Department, the international studies program and Schewe Library.
