When a student/family completes and submits the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), they may be selected by the federal government or the school for a process known as "verification". Selection for verification may be random or as the result of missing, inconsistent or seemingly incorrect information. On average, about 30% of FAFSAs are selected for verification.
By law, the verification process must be complete before federal and state financial aid can be applied to a student's account. Official financial aid awards cannot be provided to students until the process is complete.
