IC holds 25th Annual Community Service Blitz
More than 375 volunteers from Illinois College will participate in the 25th Annual Community Service Blitz on Sunday, August 26, at 2 p.m.
The Service Blitz introduces new students to the value of service and helps many to become acquainted with their new home in Jacksonville.
The annual Community Service Blitz has become a tradition, signifying the start of a new academic year at Illinois College. It is again scheduled for the Sunday before classes begin on Tuesday, August 28. First-year students, returning students, faculty and staff from IC will complete a variety of service projects at locations throughout the community including painting, landscaping, general cleaning and other tasks.
Cori Wagner, assistant director of career services, is helping to organize this year’s Service Blitz. She said that the collaborative project has become an important part of the Illinois College experience for all students.
“The Service Blitz introduces new students to the value of service and helps many to become acquainted with their new home in Jacksonville. It also brings together all corners of the Illinois College community to work hand-in-hand and achieve something as a group. It’s a great way to kick off the academic year,” said Wagner.
Illinois College has been nationally recognized in recent years for its sustained commitment to service-learning, notably earning a top ranking in the Midwest for community service based learning by Washington Monthly. The annual Service Blitz demonstrates one way in which IC prepares students to lead fulfilling lives of leadership and service.
Service Blitz volunteer sites for 2018 include Pony Colt Baseball, Our Redeemer Day Care, Morgan County Fairgrounds, Prairieland Heritage Museum, Jacksonville Area Baseball (Legion), the David Strawn Art Gallery, the Jacksonville Public Library, Salem Lutheran School, Governor Duncan Mansion, Heritage Health Nursing Home, Professional Clothing Closet, Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church, Presbyterian Day Care, The Nursery School, Bob Freesen YMCA, Grierson House, Educational Daycare, Woodlawn Farm and North East End Development. Students from Illinois College will also partner with students from MacMurray College to clean up neglected burial sites associated with the Morgan County Poor House and Farm.
