Brennen Smith '25
Brennen Smith ’25 didn’t always envision himself in college, but at Illinois College, he found a direction and a future in service.

A history major from Geneseo, Illinois, Smith is preparing to enter Navy Officer School in Rhode Island, with aspirations to work in military intelligence or as a surface warfare officer. It’s a bold step, and one he credits to the growth and support he found at IC.
“I never thought I was going to go to college, but IC changed that for me,” he says. “It made me believe I could do more.”
While at IC, Smith interned at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, where he gained valuable experience and formed meaningful connections with professionals in the field. He also served as a First-Year Seminar mentor, working closely with students and faculty members who helped shape his path. Professors like Dane Wendell and his academic advisor became trusted mentors, encouraging him to lead and aim higher.
A dedicated football player throughout college, Smith found the structure and discipline of athletics complemented his academic pursuits. Though he didn’t travel far from home for IC, he now plans to go far, geographically and professionally.
“Illinois College gave me the time management skills, the discipline, and the confidence to do something I never imagined,” he says. “I’m ready to serve, and I’m ready to lead.”
