Matea Aleksandrovska '25

Matea Aleksandrovska ’25 came to Illinois College for a degree in biochemistry, but what she gained was so much more: a global perspective, a passion for people, and a future in medicine.

“I always wanted to go into healthcare,” Aleksandrovska says. “But my time at IC helped me discover the kind of doctor I want to be. One who sees the whole person.”

As a student-athlete on the tennis team, Aleksandrovska balanced the intensity of science coursework with the demands of collegiate athletics. She also immersed herself in student life, serving as a residential assistant, a global citizen mentor, and a peer educator for the IC Blue Pulse initiative focused on student mental health.

One of her most transformative experiences was an international internship in Macedonia with a physician she admired. “It was my first real look into the medical field,” she explains. “And it confirmed that this is my path.”

At IC, Aleksandrovska pursued every opportunity to connect her learning to the real world. She worked in the chemistry department preparing labs and equipment, gaining hands-on experience and mentorship. Outside the classroom, she volunteered, led, and inspired peers across cultures.

Now, she’s preparing for the MCAT and applying to medical schools, with hopes of studying either in the U.S. or Europe. Her ambition is to specialize in psychiatry or family medicine, both of which are fields that reflect her care for both science and humanity.

“Illinois College made me brave,” Aleksandrovska says. “I came here not knowing anyone, not knowing what to expect. And now I’m leaving confident, grounded, and ready to make a difference.”
